Save the Date! #MuseUp in the DZNSZA special exhibtion ‘Batteries for the Wehrmacht’

[Ins Deutsche wechseln]

It’s been a while since our last #MuseUp, but now you have to wait no longer! After the trains were cancelled last year, and our tour round the Nazi Forced Labour Documentation Centre (DZNSZA) at Berlin Schöneweide ended up being rather small, we are taking the opening of the new special exhibition ‘Batteries for the Wehrmacht: Forced Labour at Petrix 1939-1945’ as an excuse to venture out to Schöneweide again.

On Tuesday, 15th December, the DZNSZA is inviting us on a Twitter tour around the new exhibition. Batteries were a central wartime industrial product and an important source of income. The company Petrix produced dry batteries and torches for the Wehrmacht and supplied the Luftwaffe with fuse batteries for combat aircraft. The exhibition sheds light on the role of the company within the German armaments industry. Original exhibits and the testimonies of contemporary witnesses give an impression hazardous work conditions in the battery factory. At the heart of the exhibition are the biographies of former forced labourers, both male and female.

For those of you who maybe missed it the last time, the site at Schöneweide is the last well-preserved former Nazi forced labour camp in Germany. In the Second World War it served as one of the more than 3000 collective accommodations dispersed throughout the city for forced labourers. Further information on the labour camp as a historic site can be found on the Documentation Centre’s website, and there is even a separate website for the permanent exhibition, and a flyer. for the special exhibition.
